It can be applied as a vulcanizing agent, wood preservative, catalyst, gelling agent, heat stabilizer and hydrogen flame extinguishing agent. It is also used for flame retardant treatment of cotton, preparation of active silica, and as a derivatization reagent for gas chromatographic analysis of carbohydrate derivatives. Other applications include derivatization reagent for gas chromatography, solvent, and catalyst for the manufacture of ketones.
