In the leather industry, it hydrolyzes raw hides for depilation, and is also formulated into sodium polysulfide to speed up soaking and softening of dry hides. It works as a cooking agent in papermaking. In the textile industry, it is used for denitration of man-made fibers, reduction of nitrates, and dyeing of cotton fabrics.
